Raw Camera Club: A Morning at Creagh Wood Hide
The Raw Camera Club had an early start at our most recent monthly outing, with Lucas already recording on his GoPro before dawn had fully broken. Our destination? The peaceful and wildlife-rich Creagh Wood hide, a favourite spot for photographing the elusive Red Squirrel.
Armed with apples, nuts, and carrots, we set up in the crisp morning light, hoping to entice the squirrels into view. After some quiet waiting, our patience paid off—the Red Squirrels came out to play, bounding energetically from tree to tree, pausing just long enough for a few precious shots. Their agility and character made them the stars of the day.
While we waited, we were treated to an impressive variety of birdlife. Among the highlights were the striking Jays, Blue Tits, Siskins, and a Great Spotted Woodpecker, who made several appearances. We also heard the tell-tale call of a Wren, and spotted Goldfinches and Dunnocks flitting through the underbrush.
One of the best aspects of outings like these is the camaraderie and shared knowledge within the club. The more experienced members are always on hand to offer tips—not only on camera techniques, but also in identifying the many species we encounter. Their insights enrich the experience for everyone, especially those new to wildlife photography.
To round off a fantastic morning, we headed to McBride’s in Cushendun for a fabulous lunch. Over great food and even better company, we shared highlights from the hide, reviewed our shots, and enjoyed plenty of laughs—the craic was mighty.
Until next time, happy shooting from all of us at Raw Camera Club!
