Raw Photographic – November Club Night: Photoshop Workshop
November’s club night at Raw Photographic was all about creativity, curiosity and a deep dive into the digital darkroom we all know, love… and sometimes fear just a little bit: Adobe Photoshop.
This month, our members gathered for a hands-on workshop designed to demystify the essentials of Photoshop and give everyone the confidence to elevate their editing skills. Whether brand new to the platform or just looking to brush up on the fundamentals, there was something for everyone.
We kicked off the evening by breaking down the interface. The toolbar, the layers panel, adjustment menus, workspace options – all the things that can feel overwhelming suddenly made sense when explored step-by-step. Members quickly discovered that a little familiarity goes a long way, especially when navigating such a powerful program.
One of the highlights of the night was learning how to use Generative Fill, Photoshop’s increasingly impressive AI-powered tool. With just a simple selection and a few words, members were amazed at how effortlessly they could remove unwanted objects, expand a frame, or create something entirely new.
Next, we dove into layers and masks, the true building blocks of non-destructive editing. Members learned how to stack adjustments, blend images, reveal and conceal areas with precision, and make changes without ever harming the original photograph. Once the concept clicked, you could practically see the lightbulbs turning on.
To finish off, we had a fabulous presentation on focus stacking by Bobby. He broke down how to take a macro shot and stack it in Photoshop, ensuring the whole image ended up in focus. A valuable tool for all our budding macro enthusiasts in the club.
From keyboard shortcuts to adjustment layers, from blending modes to adding textures and overlays, the night was packed with practical tips and real-world demonstrations. The workshop flowed at an easy pace, giving everyone time to experiment, ask questions, and compare results.
The best part? The feedback. Members were incredibly receptive, engaged, and eager to put their new skills to use. Many commented that they finally felt like Photoshop was “clicking,” and they left feeling more confident—and more inspired—than ever.
A big thank you to everyone who attended, asked great questions, and helped make the evening both educational and enjoyable. We love seeing our members grow in their craft each month, and we can’t wait to build on these skills in future sessions.
Until next time—keep shooting, keep creating, and keep exploring!
