Tuesday night saw the return of Raw Photographic Camera club after the Christmas and New Year break.
Our first meeting of 2025 welcomed Press Photographer, Kevin Scott, as our guest speaker. Kevin is the Visuals Editor for The Belfast Telegraph and he won UK Press Photographer of the Year in 2020. And he has only turned 30!
We heard how Kevin got into photography as a teenager and how it progressed into a love for journalism and capturing events as they happened.
He showed us some of his images taken throughout his career...some were entertaining and some were altogether shocking, as were the stories that went along with them. It all seemed like water off a ducks back to this seasoned pro, though, who nonchalantly told us about death threats and the option to have bullet proof windows installed in his home. It would seem a thick skin and nerves of steel are needed in this line of work.
Kevin also showed us the lighter side of his job, where he gets to photograph concerts and sporting events, though hearing some of his stories, even these shoots aren't as glamorous and star studded as they first appear!
The members got to see first hand some of Kevin's gear, which included a MASSIVE 400mm telescopic lens. A cool £14k piece of equipment that allows the Photographer to be a safe distance from some of the more dangerous action.
We all thoroughly enjoyed Kevin's presentation. It was incredibly interesting and wonderful to hear him speak. Though, I don't think any of us are rushing out to become Press photographers just yet!
See you all next month!
