'Festive Fun Painting with Light’

A selection of club members met on Tuesday 3rd December to have a fun evening learning or perfecting the photography trick of painting with light.

As the night outside was somewhat uninviting, due to the rain, everyone shared their creative ideas in one room. Cameras were mounted on tripods, small apertures and slow shutter speeds were selected on cameras, and the fun began. A variety of light sources from torches, to coloured LEDs and Christmas tree lights were brought out to play.

At one point it looked like planes were being directed in by ground control, but it was great to see the different images people aimed for. Essentially the light sources were used to create designs or even for writing, whilst the camera captures the image on a long exposure. The end result is a colourful and dynamic image created from the moving light source in a dark environment.

The technique, once learned, could be used in so many ways to enhance images and the editing seems very straightforward – at least for basic images! Another great night at the club developing photography skills.
